Why is golden hour so flattering?
Low sun is soft and comes from the side, which gives a face shape without harsh shadows, and it puts a warm rim of light on hair and shoulders that separates you from the background. It flatters almost every face, which is why photographers chase it.
Does the skyline look fake?
The skyline is deliberately soft and out of focus, which is how it would actually look through a lens focused on your face at that distance. A pin-sharp skyline behind a sharp face is one of the clearest signs a photo was assembled rather than taken.
